On Wednesday the Bates Women’s Tennis Team traveled to Amherst Massachusetts for their rematch with the Lord Jeffs. In their first meeting, Amherst beat the Bobcats 9-0 in the first round of the Nor’easter Bowl at Brandeis University. This meeting proved to be a completely different affair.
Starting in doubles the Bobcats set the tone. Fighting on every court, the matches lasted almost an hour longer than it had in their first meeting. At one doubles Ellie and Ashley hung tough with only one break at the start of the match separating them from Amherst’s Devlin and Pangolas as they fell 8-6. At two doubles the score truly didn’t tell the story of the match. While Nicole and Kristen fell 8-2 to Richman and Alvy of Amherst, they took every game to deuce, came back from a 3-0 deficit to get back on serve at 3-2, and fought relentlessly until the end. A similar scenario played out at three doubles, Jacqui and Jenna played steady with Monteagudo and Camacho losing 8-3 but fighting hard in an hour and half match.
Going into singles the Bobcats were down 3-0. However, looking at Bates women one would have never guessed. At one singles Ellie took Amherst’s Caroline Richman to three sets, falling in the super tiebreaker by the score of 1-6, 6-4, 10-6. Both Kristen and Nicole at 6 and 4 singles respectively both lost hard fought-straight sets matches. Nicole was even able to real off 3 straight games down 5-0 to lose her second set by the score of 6-3. The final match and moment of the day belonged to Jacqui Holmes who fought off two match points in her super tiebreak with Safi Alvy to take the match and the only point of the day for the Bobcats 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
The Women will be in action all weekend as they travel to Connecticut College on Saturday to play the Camels and then Hamilton College for a match against the Continentals on Sunday.
