Bates Mens tennis drops decision to Williams

On Thursday, the Bates men’s tennis team traveled to Williamstown Massachusetts to take on the 5th ranked Williams Ephs. The Bates men were ready to get back into action after a week and a half downtime following their 5-4 loss to Amherst.

Doubles between the two teams showcased some amazing tennis as both 1 and 2 came down to the wire. At 3 Ben and Henry fought hard but were unable to contend with Williams’ Chow and Astrachan, falling 8-0. At two, Timmy and Pierre fought off over 8 match points against Micheli and Sun but eventually fell 9-7. Meanwhile Rob and Matt were locked in a back and forth battle with Meyer and Schidlovsky of Williams. As both teams traded breaks throughout the pro-set the affair came down to a tiebreaker. In the breaker both teams came up with astounding shots but Meyer would clinch the 3rd and final doubles point with the 9-8 (5) win.

Going into singles the Bobcats were determined not to let down in the face of the 3-0 deficit. While Bettles, Lee and Ruta fell in straight sets, Rob, Timmy, and Pierre went the distance. At one, Rob and Trey Meyer fought hard but in the end Meyer prevailed 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.  Second to last off was Pierre Planche who reeled in Bates’ only point as he beat Zach Weiss 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Finally in a gritty match against Matt Micheli, Timmy climbed his way back from a set and a break down to take the match to a super tiebreak. Timmy even fought off match points in the second set tiebreaker. However, Micheli proved to be the tougher competitor that day as he won the breaker and match 3-6, 7-6(6), 11-9.

The Bates Men will play Conn College at Conn Saturday Afternoon, and then Hamilton College on Sunday afternoon in Clinton NY.
