Yesterday in the Wallach Tennis Centers-Home opener, the Bates Women beat their Maine state rival Colby in an 8-1 decision. Coming off a tough loss to Trinity only two days before the Bobcats were hungry and showed it in their gritty win.
In doubles the Bobcats started hot, breaking the Mules on all four courts within the first four games of each pro set. After getting down 2-1 in two doubles Junior Kristen Doerer and senior Nicole Russell surged past Abel and Love of Colby winning the match 8-2 and putting the Bobcats up 1-0. Next off was one doubles, Colby’s Perese and Wiener stayed with Ellie and Ashley for most of the exciting match but after trading match points back and forth in the tie-breaker, the Bates pair finally capitalized at 11-10 up, winning the match 9-8 (12-10) for the 2-0 lead. Last off for the Bobcats was Jacqui Holmes and senior Jenna Burke who took down Holmes and McAuliff 8-5 to give Bates the 3-0 sweep in doubles. Jacqui and Jenna, up 5-4 played four 10 minute deuce games before coming through with the exceptional win.
With the 3-0 lead the Bobcats went to work in singles. Despite the deficit the Mules did not go quietly. Three of the six matches went to third set super-breakers, but this did not deter the 29th ranked Bobcats as they would win all three. Ellie and Jacqui were first off as they gritted through two tough-straight-set victories, clinching the 5-1 decision for the Bobcats. Ashley and Nicole both went the distance but kept composed and authoritatively took care of their opponents in the super-breakers. Meanwhile, Kristen Doerer at 6 singles came all the way back from a set and a break down to force the super, and then fought off 6 match points to comeback from 9-3 down in the breaker to Boyo of Colby and clinch the 8-1 score for the Bobcats.
Bates will be in action again tomorrow, April 17, as they take on the the Lord Jeffs of Amherst at 4pm at Amherst.
