On Saturday the Bates Men’s tennis team traveled to Medford MA to take on the Tufts Jumbos. Playing in their first match outdoors in New England the Bobcats faced windy conditions and chilly temperatures as well as the up and coming Jumbos. Kicking off with doubles in the late morning the Bobcats took a quick 1-0 lead as Pierre Planche and Timmy Berg got back to their winning ways with a 8-1 win against Tufts’ Westerfield and Takedhier. However, in an upset win, Tufts Barad and Jacobsen would even the score with a 8-6 win over the 2nd ranked team in the region in Rob Crampton and Matt Bettles. Knotted at one a piece, Henry Lee and Ben Bogard turned it on to cruise to a 8-4 win over Lutz and Pataro, clinching the 2-1 doubles point for the Bobcats.
With the lead Bates stormed through their first sets. In 5 of the 6 matches Bates took the first set. Pierre would take his second set as easily as his first cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win to give Bates a 3-1 lead. Yet, despite being down sets and second set breaks Tufts fought back. At six singles Jacobsen took down Eric Ruta in a gritty 7-6, 6-2 victory to make cut Bates’ lead to 3-2. However, despite third sets at one, two, and four singles Bates clinched the win with ease as Timmy and Rob came through with the last two wins for the 5-1 decision. Henry Lee would also prevail in three sets while Bettles would fall in the third set tiebreaker to end the match with the final score of 6-3.
Next weekend both the Men and Women will be in action in MA as the Men will suit up to play the Amherst Lord Jeffs on Saturday at Amherst, while the women will play their first round tournament match of the Noreaster’ Bowl at Wellesley.
