Bates downs Babson 8-1

Last Friday afternoon the Bates Bobcats were back in action at the Merrill Gym. The Women were pitted against the Lady-Beavers of Babson College. The Bobcats took control early and never let up winning the match 8-1 in just under four hours. This was a huge improvement over the tight 5-4 win the Bobcats nabbed over the Beavers the year before. The only hiccup of the day came in doubles. Having won one and three doubles with relative ease, the pairing of Jacqui and Lucy started out hot taking a 5-2 lead. However, Babson’s Tori Paolino and Alexis Ferraro played some gritty tennis to break back and eventually take the pro-set 9-7. This made the score 2-1 in favor of Bates going into singles play.

Despite the late setback in doubles, the Bobcats came out firing in singles. Between two and five singles Jacqui, Ashley, Lucy and Nicole lost 8 total games, winning all of their matches in straight sets. At one singles, Ellie and her opponent, Alex Freeman traded breaks resulting in a first set tiebreaker. Ellie proved to be the tougher competitor as she wrapped up the set 7-6, and stormed through the second 6-0 for the win. In the final match on Audrey also gritted out a first set 7-5, and then also followed up with a strong second closing out Babson’s Courtney Fischer 7-5, 6-2.

Bates’ Next match will be away as both the men and the women will travel to Vermont to play Middlebury next Sunday at the Nelson Arena.
