Women’s weekend at Middlebury

Saturday morning the Bobcats took a bus to Middlebury for the weekend for matches against NYU and Middlebury. After watching “Miracle” on the drive down, the Cats had some extra inspiration heading into their match against NYU. Apparently the movie had the desired effect and the Cats came out firing on all cylinders in doubles. At #2 Kristen Doerer and Erika Blauth played flawless doubles, with Erika cranking returns and Kristen moving aggressively at the net putting anyway any ball she could reach for the 8-1 win. At #3 Nicole Russell and Ashley Brunk were a force to be reckoned with. The pair executed their game plan perfectly, hitting aggressive lobs over the net player so they could both attack the net for the 8-3 win. At #1 Meg and Ellie were in a battle that left them down a break 5-4 before they turned it around. They committed to ripping to ball into safe targets and moved really well to not only get the break back, but to win 4 straight games and the match 8-5. It was the Bobcats third straight match sweeping the doubles and it was great to see the plays we run in practice executed so well in a match setting.

In singles Meg Anderson gave the Bobcats their fourth point at #2 singles. Meg has been playing great tennis and it continued in this match. She played long directional points looking to create a short ball. When she did, she attacked to the open side and then closed well to angle off volleys. She ran this play over and over and it worked brilliantly in her 6-2 6-2 win. At #3 Jacqui Holmes sealed the match for the Bobcats with her 6-1 7-5 win over Ramya Pokala. Jacqui hustled down every ball and was able to dictate play with her big forehand in the win for the Cats. Due to restrictions over the hours bus drivers can be on the road, the match was called to a stop at decision, with the bobcats winning the match 5-1, and up a set at #4 and #5 matches. The Bobcats really played well today and with a lot of energy in this 5-1 victory and our 3rd straight win.

The next morning against #9 Middlebury the Bobcats continued playing great tennis. At #3 doubles, Ashley Brunk and Nicole Russell won their 4th straight match 9-7 over the highly ranked Panthers. Even more impressive than the win, was the way that it happened. Ashley and Nicole played great all match, and with lots of energy, but they were playing a talented team and found themselves down 6-3. But they showed great resolve as they kept their energy level up and fought for every ball. They clawed their way back into the match and kept their composure on the big points, and executed the plays we run in practice perfectly. On match point Ashley ripped a return that the panthers hit a great lob on, but Nicole’s overhead was better, as she popped the ball from the baseline for the winner and the match.

This would be the only match for the Bobcats as the Panthers put an end to the 3 match win streak, but the Bobcats played great across the board and with tremendous fight and energy. On Wednesday the Cats will travel to Babson to take on the very talented Beaver team.
