Men’s Fall Rankings

The Fall Preseason Rankings were released last week with 6 NESCAC schools listed in the top 30 in the country. Traditionally, the preseason team rankings reflect last year’s results and do not take into account individual fall tournament play. This year was no different, the Bobcats finished last season ranked #27 in the nation and will go into this spring ranked #26. There are 4 regions across the country and Bates is the preseason #7 for the Northeast region.

Contrary to the team rankings, the individual rankings fluctuate greatly based on performances in the fall schedule. At the end of last school year, only Amrit Rupasinghe was ranked in singles. He was #42 in the nation and #12 in the region (the top 8 players in the region make the national tournament). This preseason left the Bobcats with 3 players ranked regionally, and 2 nationally. Sophomore Matt Bettles, who had an impressive fall finishing runner-up in the ITA Championships as well as the Wallach Invitational is ranked #3 in the region and #14 in the nation. First-Year sensation Timmy Berg received his first rankings at #12 in the region and #49 in the nation. Rob Crampton was the third Bobcat who received a ranking at #19 in the Northeast region respectively. Bettles and Berg also combined for the #13 ranked doubles team in the region.

While these rankings are nice assurances of the Bobcat’s hard work, they mean nothing without strong performances in the spring. The team is playing/lifting/running/biking everyday to get ready for the season and has its sights set on much higher goals. The team will continue working hard on their own until they open up the spring season in February in Florida.
