WOMEN COMPETE AT ITA CHAMPIONSHIP

Four members of the women’s team traveled to MIT in Cambridge in September to compete in the ITA Regional Championship tournament. Members playing were senior Caryn Benisch, and first years Meg Anderson, Erika Blouth, and Brooke Morse-Karzan. Caryn started the tournament off on a winning note for the Bobcats by defeating Alicia Cauteruccio from Connecticut College 6-3, 6-0. While Caryn was taking it to her younger opponent, Meg was in a battle against Jacqueline Shen of Wellesley. Playing her first collegiate match, Meg got a taste of what it will be like playing at the top of the line-up for a Bates team that competes against the best in the New England region. She lost a tough one to Shen 6-2, 6-2. Caryn then went back on the court Friday afternoon, to play against Amherst’s Carlissa King. In a well played match by both players, King came out on top 6-3, 6-4. The doubles team of Erika and Brooke took the court an hour later, knowing they had a tough test ahead of them playing the #2 seeds of Berkes and Brown from Amherst. The pair wasn’t intimidated whatsoever holding serve in the first game. Both ladies played hard, but couldn’t catch up to the speedy serves and solid returns of the Amherst women. For the Bobcat women it was a good experience and they realized they could compete against the best in the NESCAC as well as the region. Taking the lessons learned from the ITA Championship, the Bobcats felt good about their chances against Babson in early October.
