Today the Bates women were back in action at Brandies University for the first round of the Nor’easter bowl. Their first round opponent was the Amherst Lord Jeffs who are not only the number one seed of the tournament, but also the number ranked team in the country according to the March rankings. Having not played a match in over two weeks, the Bobcats fought well in the 9-0 loss.
Starting with doubles, the women had rough matches at one and two losing both at love. However, at three the Bobcats led for most of the match. Breaking early, senior Nicole Russell and junior Kristen Doerer played well carrying the break until 6-5 when the Amherst’s Monteagudo and Camacho broke back and turned it around for the 8-6 win.
Down 3-0 the Bobcats kept fighting. While Jacqui Holmes and Ellie Manzhakova started to dig in during their second sets, they were still unable to muster any momentum against their top-ranked opponents Jordan Brewer and Jen Newman. At three, Ashley Brunk continued her hot play this season going up 4-1 on Amherst’s Caroline Richman , yet, she was unable to hold on as Newman stormed back breaking Ashley to win the match 6-2, 7-5. At four, five and six, Lucy Brennan, Nicole Russell and Audrey Grauer fought hard but were unable to gain any advantage and fell in straight sets.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow as the Men travel to Amherst to play the Lord Jeffs while the women will play Brandeis at Brandeis University in the back draw of the Nor’easter bowl.
